The Removable Storage Access Utility allows you to decrypt encrypted files. You can either work with the encrypted file from the device itself, or you can decrypt the file to another location. Both methods are described below.
Whichever method you choose, if the lock icon on the file is red, you will be prompted to provide the credentials that were used to encrypt the file. Contact CCIT by sending an email to CCIT@columbia.edu if you do not know which password to use.
To work with the file from the device itself, either double-click or right-click and select Open. If you are prompted for credentials, see "Decryption Prompts" below.
Decrypt to Location
To work with a file or folder from a location other than the removable device, right-click the file or folder, point to Decrypt To, and select Location.
The Browse For Folder dialog appears.
Browse to the appropriate location. This must be a location other than the removable device. To create a new folder or subfolder select an existing folder then click Make New Folder. A folder named New Folder appears under the selected folder. Right-click the new folder to rename it.
Once you have selected the destination of the decrypted file or folder, click OK.
After attempting to decrypt a file with a red lock icon, you will be prompted to provide the password that was used to encrypt it. Contact CCIT by sending an email to CCIT@columbia.edu if you do not know which password to use.
If the policy allows you to encrypt files using passwords, the password decryption prompt will be displayed.
Type the password that the file was encrypted under. If you enter the wrong password more than the specified number of password attempts remaining, you will be forced to wait one minute before trying again.
